Soldotna High School kicked-off the Labor Day Weekend with a dedication ceremony for the new field-turf field and synthetic track complex on Saturday at Soldotna High School, followed by a community indoor picnic and community dance in the school commons.

Soldotna High Principal Todd Syverson spearheaded a coordinated effort between the school, students, staff, community members and businesses, to bring together the Soldotna community.

Syverson elaborated on dedication day events.

Syverson: Well we wanted to do a combination of things, we had a brand new sports complex to celebrate and with the two schools coming together, we really wanted to bring the greater Soldotna area together. So, thanks to people like Kathy, Dale and Irv, we set up this event months ago. Our student council partnered with this group of business folk. It was a great opportunity to do multiple things: one, to celebrate the new sports complex; two, to bring these two schools together. So we thought the bar-be-que feed after the football game and the dance would be a great way to get everybody together and just celebrate this wonderful community we live in.

Syverson: The business folks have been so super, they bought 800 sweatshirts for our students, they bought every staff a sweatshirt. They went out to Skyview and bought Skyview Middle School sweatshirts for the both the students and staff. We’ve had a lot of fun kicking-off these three new schools and things have been going extremely well, but I think it’s important that we’ve been so focused on the students we wanted to do something also for our communities; thus the bar-be-que and the big dance.

Approximately 250-300 people attended the community feed and dance in the SoHi Commons on Saturday night.
