During the November 12 Soldotna City Council meeting, public comment was taken on asking voters to approve forming a charter commission in order to become home ruled.

Soldotna resident Daniel Lynch asked questions about the ordinance, illustrating a lack of understanding as to what home rule city would mean for Soldotna.

Lynch: “Well I think the city should provide both sides of information, both rights and responsibilities because I come in not knowing anything as far as both gloves what are they filled with? There’s always a balance to everything.”

In the October 7 municipal election, the city of Homer voted down the option of creating a charter commission and City Manager Walt Wrede said he wondered if it was because not enough people knew what exactly it was they were voting on.

The Soldotna ordinance to put the question to residents was passed by the council unanimously and will be presented in a special election February 3, 2015.

At that same election voters would also elect seven Charter Commission Members.
