Soldotna Home Rule Election Receives Criticism

Soldotna’s special election to form a home rule charter will be February 3, but is receiving criticism for not educating residents enough.

 

Daniel Lynch and Fred Sturman both testified at Wednesday’s Soldotna City Council meeting, asking why more had not been done to inform residents what they would be voting on.

Both men also speculated that the city’s move to become home rule was in part due to potentially losing the 6% sales tax on unprepared food, commonly known as the grocery tax.

 

At the meeting council members responded by saying it has been hard to create interest in this election, despite individual efforts and the $5,000 allocated by the council for radio campaigns and newspaper ads.

 

Councilman Keith Baxter said this upcoming vote is only to create the home rule charter, not for the city to go to home rule. After that…

Absentee voting in the election is now open and polls at the Soldotna City Hall will be open from 7 am to 8 pm this coming Tuesday, February 3.
