The Soldotna Library is hosting a story time geared towards children who have a hard time in large groups, are on the autism spectrum, or are sensitive to sensory overload tomorrow.
City Librarian Rachel Nash says the event was initiated by Soldotna’s Children’s Librarian Linda McMilin who read about the idea online.
Nash: “It’s more about using the other senses to help them understand, it’s also going to be very gentle, it’s not going to be our usual large crowd of children, it’ll be a smaller crowd, they usually say 12 or under is a good number. We’re always understanding if a child needs to take a cry break but we’ll specifically be giving them a safe place to go to if they need to go there. I think she’s going to have a tactile activity where they can touch things as part of the story, it’ll be really great I think.”
The event is for children 2-13 and Nash says the library will implement low lighting and read preschool-level books.
The Sensory Story Time will start at 2:30 pm Thursday, March 17, in the Community Room of the Soldotna Library.
Adult supervision is required.
