Soldotna Looking Ahead to Future of Airport

Summer construction on the Soldotna Airport is wrapping up but the city’s work on updates and planning will continue into the winter.

 

Earlier this summer the Soldotna City Council approved a $8,300 matching grant for the Phase II of the Airport Master Plan.

 

City Engineer Kyle Kornelis says the airport commission will review the draft this week.

Kornelis: “We look at aviation forecasts, some facility requirements. Down the road we’ll continue to look at alternates to development and evaluation and some environmental considerations and some other elements that get implemented into a master plan. So this is kind of the first big review where we come to the public and the airport commission and say here’s the results thus far as we continue with the master plan efforts.”

 

The city also finished field work for 3D imaging and mapping of the Soldotna Airport this summer and will be working to add the data to the FAA’s Aerial GIS system.

Kornelis: “In a nutshell, one important task will be to confirm that there are no penetrations into a 20/1 approach slope going into the airport.”

 

Kornelis says so far there are no construction projects scheduled on the airport for next summer but the city is “aggressively pursuing” Federal grants for next year.

 

The Soldotna Airport Commission will review the draft of Phase two in the Airport Master Plan during a work session after their 5:30 pm regular meeting.
