Soldotna Mayor Nels Anderson’s resignation letter and reappointment to the mayor’s seat was accepted by the city council Wednesday.
Anderson said there are a number of things to focus on before his term ends.
“The marijuana issue we’re going to need to settle, whether it will be done while I’m here I’m not sure, but that’s a big thing that’s in flux that we’re not quite sure how it’s going to happen. There’s certain things like what’s going to happen with our revenues from the grocery tax and things like that we just don’t know yet. But I think our city council is proceeding in a very orderly and reasonable direction on expansion of the sports center and other projects.”
He said Soldotna’s annexation will not be finalized before he gets out of office based on the amount of time the economic study will take.
Pete Sprague stated this week that he plans to run in the mayoral election in October; he said as for annexation…
“I’m in favor of it and I did vote to go forward with the economic study to see what the benefits would be in certain areas outside the city itself. I’m real reluctant to look at areas that are already residential areas, I don’t think that the benefits would exceed the costs to the city. But that may prove not to be the case through the economic study.”
Both Sprague and Anderson said the council is very in-tune with what they’ve heard from residents outside of city limits and do not plan to annex those who have voiced their opposition.
The candidacy filing period opens August 1 for the October election.
