Soldotna Recreation Calendar Takes Aim at “Boredom” in Community

Soldotna’s Parks and Recreation Department began a project to compile recreational events after their 2014 Master Plan identified a need for a one-stop place for information as a way to combat boredom.

Assistant Director Joel Todd says their aim is to host and manage the new online calendar but want the community to make it their own.

Todd: “If it’s a public event or a workshop or a class or an activity, lets put it all in one area. Because everybody has their Facebook page or maybe a telephone number for a contact but there’s not a greater visual space for people to get the word out. So it’s sort of taking the old school bulletin board at Kaladi Brothers and blowing it up.”

Community members are able to choose what kinds of events they want to view on the calendar.

Todd: “You can zone in on I just want to do fun runs that are $20 or cheaper and just that stuff will show up rather than sifting through just pages and pages of things that don’t apply to my interests.”

The Parks and Rec Department is hoping to continue adding features to the calendar such as a personalized sign-in where users can save their preferences about what events they would like to see and receive notifications on.
