One of the main entrances to the Soldotna Safeway suffered serious damage after someone accidentally drove into it.

Soldotna Police report that an unidentified 23-year-old female from Nikiski struck the building on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 11:14 p.m. She was reportedly driving a 2012 Hyundai and was pulling up to park in front of the store. The vehicle accidentally accelerated and grazed a parked 2007 GMC Yukon before crashing through the store’s outer wall and into the arctic entryway by where the carts are placed. The GMC Yukon had minor damage, but the Hyundai was towed from the scene.

Central Emergency Services tells KSRM they responded to the scene, but were there for only 15 minutes after determining that no injuries were reported and promptly turned the situation over to Soldotna Police.

A local resident took to social media detailing their account of what happened, saying they were shopping at the time when a vehicle crashed through the door. They expressed shock at the sight and sound of a vehicle slamming into the store. The store closed following the incident and have since reopened.

Temporary repairs were put into place, but Soldotna Police say that the store building sustained significant damage.

No citations were issued.

KSRM tried to reach out to the Soldotna Safeway for comment.
