All penalties on outstanding balances on utilities in the city of Soldotna have been waived, according to an online update shared to the city’s website on Tuesday.
The statement says that the decision was made to help mitigate unintended harm from the COVID-19 pandemic. They acknowledged that access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing hands has proven to be one of the most critical staples in preventing the spread of COVID-19. They acknowledged water as an essential function of the city that will be given high priority, and reminded residents that they can continue normal use of tap water, as COVID-19 has not been detected in drinking water supplies.
The city also addressed use of toilets, an issue that has impacted communities across the globe given the shortage of sewer-safe toilet paper in-stores. The statement says, “Please remember, toilets are not garbage cans.” Flushing anything other than human waste, toilet paper, and wastewater down the sewer system can damage an entire city’s infrastructure and natural environment. In addition, it can result in backups or overflows at a time where clean, usable water is incredibly important.
When the conversation of clean water arises, it’s important to remember the first piece of advice that the Centers for Disease Control issued regarding the spread of COVID-19. That is to wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds per session. Handwashing is critical to preventing the spread of COVID-19, and the city’s statement was emphatic in encouraging residents to wash hands as often as necessary, per CDC guidelines.
Despite the suspension of shutoffs, the city does encourage residents to pay their utility bills on time, if able. The lobby at Soldotna’s City Hall is closed; however, payments can still be made over the phone, online, in the drop box at City Hall, or by mail.
