The city of Soldotna has scheduled a work session to have a discussion about large events and booking requests that they are receiving for Soldotna Creek Park and the Sports Center, according to a letter from Soldotna City Manager Stephanie Queen. The work session will take place on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., immediately prior to the 6:00 p.m. start of the evening’s council meeting.
Queen says her goal is to share the best-available guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the State of Alaska, and to describe some of the challenges that event promoters and sponsors are likely to face in implementing those recommendations
Andrew Carmichael, Parks and Recreation Director, and Joel Todd, Assistant Director, will be available at the session to share information and to answer questions about the types of events that are still pending, how they operate, and what the city’s involvement would be in supporting events using city employees.
The city manager noted in her letter to Mayor Pete Sprague and the members of the Soldotna City Council that despite many large events being cancelled or rescheduled on their own due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city is fielding many inquiries about events that have not been cancelled and would like to proceed as-normal. She says she will seek direction from the council as to what Soldotna’s policy will be when it comes to allowing, or disallowing, large events or other mass gatherings that are not city-sponsored, but occur on city property.
