The Alaska Municipal League, which represents over 97 percent of Alaska’s residents, has obtained a new president for their organization. Safeguarding the rights and interests of Alaska’s municipalities from Federal and State government actions as well as developing programs that strengthen local Alaskan governments, the Alaska Municipal League has been a statewide membership organization since 1962.

Soldotna’s Vice Mayor, Lisa Parker, was elected president for the Alaska Municipal League at the 74th Local Annual Government Conference at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage that was held on Dec. 9th through the 13th of this year. Not only will Parker advocate and represent the AML and its members, but also for Soldotna.

When asked if her new role would conflict with the Soldotna City Council, Parker said that she would tackle both positions jointly. She stated that all members that serve on the AML were elected officials in their area while also mentioning Donna Aderhold, from the city of Homer, and Paul Whitney, Soldotna City Mayor.

One of Parker’s first and upcoming tasks will be to prepare for the Alaska Legislative Session held by the Alaska State Legislature that begins on Jan. 21st of 2025.

“During the legislative session, if there are issues that are of concern to the municipal league that comes up- that there’s a sharing in the legislature, I may be asked to testify on that.” Parker said. “In the next year, that’s primarily the main area, but also serve as an advocate and a spokesperson for the organization.”

The Alaska Municipal League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing 165 cities, boroughs, and unified municipalities across Alaska.
