Grant Aviation is continuing to monitor the conditions affecting their flights to and from southwest Alaska in the wake of Pavlof Volcano’s eruption.
VP of Community and Business Development Clare Ross says as of 11 am three communities are still on hold because of ash.
Ross: “Cold Bay, Dillingham, and King Salmon are all on hold this morning and we hope to have more information this afternoon on if we can get flying again.”
The company’s flights to Bethel and Bristol Bay were cancelled yesterday.
Ross says Grant Aviation will not take chances flying through the clouds of volcanic ash because of the detrimental effects it has on plane engines and other machinery.
Ross: “The one thing we have to do is, in the stations that received ash on the ground like Cold Bay and Dillingham, is wash the planes and inspect all the machinery to make sure there’s no ash in there when we fly.”
The Alaska Volcano Observatory has downgraded Pavlof Volcano’s Aviation warning after emissions from the eruption decreased overnight.
