“Sophisticated Ideas” in 25th Annual Caring for Kenai

Have you ever been unsure whether the silver-salmon you were reeling in was a chum or a king? Well, now there’s an app for that.

Kenai Central High School student Keira Stroh won last night’s 25th Annual Caring for the Kenai with her “Snappin’ Salmon” app…

Stroh: “My idea was to create a smartphone app that has the ability to identify salmon just be taking a picture. And it would compare it to an online database that would have pictures of the salmon and the measurements and the lengths of their tails and stuff like that and it would identify the fish for you in a short matter of seconds.”

Stroh’s older sister Courtney founded the popular “ROC the Kenai” program, where high school students help clean Kenai beaches during the dip net season and educate fishermen. Courtney passed the program along to Keira and KCHS junior Mackenzie Lindeman last year.

Stroh said she intends to continue developing the app, she just needs a little more technical assistance.
