Stars and Bulldogs Advance To State Football Championship Games With Playoff Victories

The 2014 ASAA Medium School Division and Small School Division playoffs opened with semi-final rounds featuring local football champions and 2013 state champions from the central peninsula.

 

 

Small School Playoffs

The Nikiski Bulldogs, 2013 Small School state champions, dominated the Seward Seahawks 48-0 on Friday, Nikiski High School.

The Bulldogs advance to the Small Schools state championships game, a fourth-straight year, to defend their state title and Nikiski will face the Eielson Ravens in a rematch of the 2013 contest.  Eielson defeat Barrow 41-6 on Saturday.

Against Seward, Nikiski used a balance run and pass attack with quarterback Cade Anderson throwing for four touchdowns; two to Hunter Holloway, one for Christian Riddall and one for Dylan Broussard.  Riddall added two rushing touchdowns and Dylan Broussard rushed for a score.

The Bulldogs will battle Eielson in the ASAA First National Bowl Small School Championship on Saturday, October 18th at Dimond High’s Alumni Field.

Game time: 4:00 p.m.

Medium School Playoffs

The Soldotna Stars and Kenai Kardinals battled in the 2014 Medium School semi-final round on Saturday.

SoHi 44 – Juneau 6

The Soldotna Stars defeated Juneau-Douglas 44-6 in the first semi-final contest at Dimond Alumni Field.

SoHi, the reigning Medium School champion, overpowered Juneau with a dominating effort on defense.  The Stars starting defense shutout the Crimson Bears, Juneau scoring its lone touchdown with :21 seconds remaining in the game.

The Star defense recorded a safety, an interception return for touchdown and stopped Juneau on downs three times.  Drew Fowler recorded both the safety and the interception TD.

Drew Gibbs lead the SoHi rushing game with three touchdowns. The Stars rushed for nearly 300 yards and five rushing touchdowns.

The Stars are 8-0 on the season and improve their current win streak to 28 games.

SoHi will face North Pole in the 2014 ASAA First National Bowl Medium School Football Championship on Saturday, October 18th at Dimond High’s Alumni Field. Game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

North Pole 47 – Kenai 14

The Kenai Kardinals fell to North Pole in Saturday’s semi-final pairing in the Medium School division at Dimond’s Alumni Field.

The Kardinals offensively could not keep pace with the Patriots multi-faceted attack.

Kenai matched the Patriots early, as both teams scored on their first drives and both scored twice in the first quarter.  Kenai touchdowns came on a 6-yard run for Kyle Foree and a 50-yard run by Chase Logan.  Kenai and North Pole tied at 14-14 after one quarter.

From there; however, it was all North Pole as the Kardinals were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.  North Pole scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and added three, second half scores.  Final score: North Pole 47, Kenai 14.

Chase Logan lead the Kardinal running game with 175 yards.

North Pole will face Soldotna in the 2014 ASAA First National Bowl Medium School Football Championship on Saturday, October 18th at Dimond High’s Alumni Field. Game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
