The 2016 ASAA State Baseball Championships, hosted at Mulcahy Park in Anchorage, opened three days of tournament play on Thursday, June 2nd.
Eight teams representing four conferences are seeded into the state tournament bracket based on last week’s conference tournament results. The top two teams from the Southcentral Conference, Wasilla and Soldotna; two teams from Mid-Alaska, Monroe and Lathrop; two from Southeast, Sitka and Ketchikan; and two from Anchorage, South and Chugiak.
The Soldotna Stars, runner-up at the Southcentral Conference tournament, opened the tournament against the #1 team from Southeast, Sitka, falling to the Wolves 12-2.
Sitka 12 – SoHi 2
The Stars scored a pair of runs in the first inning; however, that proved to be all the scoring for SoHi as the Stars dropped the tournament opener 12-2 to Sitka. The Wolves scored a run in the 2nd, two in the 3rd, three in the 5th, five runs in the 6th and one more in the seventh inning. SoHi starting pitcher Joey Becher was charged with 10 runs, eight earned on nine hits; Sitka also added six stolen bases. Calvin Hills lead the Stars at the plate going 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored.
The Stars continue tournament play on Friday with a match-up against Lathrop at 10:00 a.m. Lathrop fell to South Anchorage 11-1 in the first round.
