Stars Shock Dimond 5-4 In Hockey Showdown: Kards Down East In Overtime

The score of the night for high school hockey proved to be 5-4.

 

The Soldotna Stars defeated Dimond 5-4 in regulation; the Kenai Kardinals downed East 5-4 in overtime in non-conference hockey on Friday.  Add in a Homer win over West 4-3 and the peninsula records a sweep of Anchorage opponents.

 

SoHi 5 – Dimond 

SoHi played its best hockey of the regular season on Friday night putting together three solid periods to knock-off the Dimond Lynx 5-4 in non-conference play at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.

With under two minutes remaining, Braxton Urban broke a 4-4 tie with what proved to be the game-winning goal against the Lynx.

The Stars opened with two first-period goals, one for Alex Montague and one for Gavin Haakenson. Galen Brantley III and David Aley scored back-to-back goals in the second period for a 4-1 SoHi lead.  Dimond responses with three goals to tie the game with only 3:29 remaining in the contest.  The Stars game-winner by Urban pushed SoHi to its first non-league victory over an Anchorage team this season.

Corbin Wirz anchored the Stars in goal with 36 saves on 40 shots.

 

Kenai 5 – East 4  OT

On a night of peninsula upset victories, the Kenai Kardinals defended home ice on Senior Night with a 5-4 overtime defeat of the East Thunderbirds.

The Kardinals rallied from a 4-2 deficit with a pair of unanswered third period goals to send the game into overtime.  Matt Hagel scored both Kenai goals in the Kenai comeback in regulation.

Levi Mese lit the lamp in the overtime period for the Kardinal win; Mese scored two goals and added three assists.

Josh Tree turned in an outstanding 47 saves on 51 shots.

 

Homer 4 – West 3

Dimitry Kuzmin scored game winning goal for the Mariners.
