Star’s Welch Dives To State Championship: Eight Individuals & Five Relays Score In State Meet Finals

Kylin Welch, senior diver for the Soldotna Stars lead a parade of central peninsula athletes to the awards podium at the 2018 ASAA State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Bartlett Pool in Anchorage.

 

Welch outscored the field in the boys 1M diving for the only individual state championship for a diver or swimmer from SoHi or Kenai amd the first individual state championship for a SoHi diver/swimmer in since 2003.  Welch totaled 433.15 points on ten dives.  Teammate Sam Skolnik placed third in the 1M diving with 407.60, under three points from second place.  SoHi’s Ethan Evans placed in two individual events with a 4th in the 50 freestyle and a 5th in the 100 butterfly.

 

Kenai’s Savaii Heaven set a personal best 52.77 in the 100 backstroke good for second overall.  Heaven also finished 4th in the 100 freestyle and was a member of Kenai’s  5th place 200 medley relay and 6th place 200 freestyle relay.  The Kardinal boys placed fifth in the team scoring adding three relay top-eight results including, fifth in the 200 medley relay, seventh in the 200 freestyle free and seventh in the 400 freestyle relay.

 

The Stars girls were lead by a pair of 7th-place finishes by Sydney Juliussen in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events.  The SoHi girls also recorded an eighth in the 200 freestyle relay and a sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

 

Seward freshman swimmer Lydia Jacoby, raced to two state titles with victories in the girls 200-yard IM and the 100-yard breaststroke and was named Outstanding Female Athlete for the ASAA state meet.
