The 2016 ASAA State Nordic Ski Championships featured three days of competition for high school skiers from throughout the state at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.
The Kenai girls and SoHi boys both finished seventh overall in the cumlulaive team scoring at the Nordic State Championships. The West High girls and West High boys both earned the overall team titles.
ASAA State Nordic Ski Championships: Freestyle Race Results
The first events at the state Nordic championships featured the freestyle races.
The SoHi brother-sister pair of John-Mark Pothash and Hannah Pothash faired very well in conditions that were less than ideal.
Boys 7.5 Kilometer Freestyle
John-Mark posted the fastest time for a central peninsula skier, finishing seventh overall in the 7.5-kilometer freestyle race in 20:20. Other top-35 SoHi finishers included: Koby Vinson, 23rd; Levi Michael, 33rd and Jeremy Kupferschmid, 35th. Kenai’s Karl Danielson finished 42nd. Service High’s Canyon Tobin topped the field with an 18:55 in the freestyle event. The SoHi boys stand in 5th place after the first event.
Girls 5 Kilometer Freestyle
Hannah Pothash posted a time of 16:35 in the 5-kilometer freestyle, good for 14th overall. Kenai’s Riana Boonstra and Addison Gibson finished 16th and 17th respectively. Top-50 finishes were recorded by SoHi’s Kellie Arthur, 41st; Kenai’s Mikaela Salzetti, 43rd and Kenai’s Katie Cooper, 48th. West Anchorage’s Magdalen York topped the field with a 15:14 time in the freestyle event. The Kenai girls stand in 6th place after the first event.
ASAA State Nordic Ski Championships: Classic Race Results
Friday’s individual events included classic style races; the girls racing a 7.5 kilometer course and the boys completing a 10 kilometer course.
Girls 7.5 Kilometer Classic
Kenai’s Riana Boonstra posted the fast time for a peninsula skier in the 7.5 kilometer classic race, covering the course in 25:44 good for 14th overall. SoHi’s Hannah Pothast posted a 26:09 good for 18th overall and Kenai’s Addison Gibson posted a 26:17 for 21st place.
West High’s Magdalen York posted a 24:10 for the fastest classic time.
Boys 10 Kilometer Classic
SoHi’s John-Mark Pothast recorded the fastest classic race time for peninsula skiers, completing the 10 kilometer course in 13th place with a time of 49:57. SoHi’s Levi Michael finished 27th with a 52:15, followed by Karl Danielson in 29th.
Luke Jager of West Anchorage posted the top time at 27:36.
ASAA Skimeister Results
The ASAA Nordic Skimeister awards were presented to the skiers with the best two-day total times.
Girls Skimeister Standings
Magdalen York of West recorded a two-day total time of 39:24.8. York won both individual events, freestyle and classic.

Soldotna’s Hannah Pothast, 17th with two-day total of 42:44.19

Boys Skimeister Standings
Service’s Canyon Tobin recorded a two-day total time of 46:42; 2. Tobin won the freetyle and finished second in the classic race.

Team Relay Results
The Kenai girls finished fifth in the 4 X 3K Mixed Relay with the team of Boonstra, Cooper, Salzetti and Gibson. The SoHi girls finish 13th with Pothash, Arthur, Bennett and Chythlook. West Anchorage won the girls relay event.
The SoHi boys finished eighth in the 4 X 5K Mixed Relay with the team of Michael, Kupferschmid, Vinson and Pothash. The Kenai boys team of Danielson, Michels, Floyd and Butler finished 10th overall.
