The 2022 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Nordic Ski State Championships opened three days of competition at the Birth Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks on Thursday with the freestyle technique events.
The Individual Start Free Technique Races start at 30 second intervals. Skier finishes are ranked based upon their elapsed time over the course, not on the order they cross the finish line. A skier’s finish rank in the interval start event determines his or her start position and bib number in Friday’s classic mass start event. The winner on Thursday starts with bib #1 in position #1; the runner up with bib #2 in position #2, etc.
Thursday Race Results: Girls 5K
Marit Flora of Service High School in Anchorage posted the fastest time in the Girls 5K Freestyle on the Black Funk 5K course with a time of 15:04.4, more than :30 seconds ahead of runner-up Katie Houser of Palmer at 15:35.2.
Kenai’s Jayna Boonstra recorded a 14th-place finish with a time of 16:58.3 for the fastest time by a Kenai Peninsula skier.
Jordan Ruffner posted the fastest SoHi finish and second-fastest peninsula time with a 17:37.2, good for 21st overall.

Thursday Race Results: Boys 7.5K
Aaron Power of Service High School recorded a 7.5K Freestyle victory in 21:05.2 to win the boys race on Thursday in Fairbanks.
Jack Laker of Kenai posted the fastest time for a Kenai Peninsula skier finishing in 23rd overall with a time of 23:36.0. Quinn Cox from SoHi finished 33rd with a time of 23:57.9.
