State Nordic Ski Crowns Individual & Team Champions

The 2021 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Nordic Skiing State Championships concluded on Saturday with the team relay events, following two days of individual competition in both classic and freestyle races.

 

The ASAA Nordic Ski is a single classification state event with all competitors racing in non-divisional, all-entered, all eligible races.

According to Rus Schreckenghost, ASAA Associate Executive Director, the Nordic Ski state championships are contested under one classification.  ASAA does award a trophy to the top Division II (based on school size of 500 and under) team and the top three individuals from Division II schools.

 

ASAA Overall Team Results

The Service Cougars claim both the girls and boys overall team titles.  The Service girls topping West Valley and Chugiak for the team championship.  The Cougar boys outscored West and Chugiak for the team championship.

The Soldotna girls finished 8th; Kenai girls finished 9th and Homer girls, 13th in the overall girls team scoring.

The Kenai Kardinals girls and Homer Mariners girls fielded the only complete teams representing Division II (based on school size).  Kenai was awarded the Trophy for top Division II girls team.

The Kenai boys finished 9th and SoHi boys, 10th in the boys overall team scoring.

The Kenai boys also topped a field of two for the Division II trophy; Valdez finished 14th overall.  The Kardinal boys earned the ASAA All-Academic Award for highest grade-point average for all teams at 3.9!

 

ASAA Individual Results: Girls

Meredith Schwartz of Service High School raced to the girls overall Alaska Girls Skimeister, earning the ASAA Nordic Ski state championship.  The top three individual skiers, based on the combined classic and freestyle races included Schwartz, Ser, 41:03;  Tatum Witter, Ser, 41:13; and Katey Houser, Pal, 41:34.

Jayna Boonstra of Kenai Central High topped the girls Division II skiers with a combined time of 45:29 followed by Leah Fallon, Ken, 51:06; and Emily Moss, Ken, 51:09.

 

ASAA Individual Results: Boys

Service’s Michael Earnhart earned Alaska Boys Skimeister, sweeping the individual races with victories in the classic and freestyle events and leading Service to the boys relay victory and the overall team championship.  The top three individual skiers, based on the combined classic and freestyle races included Earnhart, Chu, 47:24;  Alexander Maurer, Ser, 48:29; and Aaron Power, Ser, 49:50.

Tyler Hippchen of Kenai Central High topped the boys Division II skiers with a combined time of 30:40 followed by Jack Laker, Ken, 30:43; and Gregory Fallon, Ken, 31:02.

1. Service, 52:15; 8. Kenai (Jayna Boonstra, Gabriella Tews, Leah Fallon, Emily Moss), 1:00:08; 10. Soldotna (Erika Arthur, Jordan Ruffner, Jordan Strausbaugh, Katie Delker), 1:00:54

Saturday’s Boys 4-by-5-kilometer Classic Relay

1. Service, 57:21; 9. Kenai (Tyler Hippchen, Ben Boersma, Gregory Fallon, Jack Laker), 1:06:06; 10. Soldotna (Quinn Cox, Dylan Hogue, Ryder Geisler, Foster Boze), 1:08:32

 

 

Event Scoring: Scoring is based on time. The time for each racer’s individual race is combined to determine the skimeister, the top ten in each event and the All-State Team. The team scores are based on the times of the top four finishers in each race. That score is added to the relay score to determine the final place finish.
