State Sen. Elvi Gray-Jackson Running For U.S. Senate

Democratic State Senator Elvi Gray-Jackson of Anchorage is throwing her hat into the race for U.S. Senate challenging incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Aside from challenging Sen. Murkowski, former Department of Administration Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, also is running for that seat.

 

In a campaign video, Gray-Jackson states that she grew up as one of seven children living in New Jersey public housing, stating that after graduating high school she worked for Bell Telephone Company as an Executive Secretary, until she was fired for being pregnant.

 

Gray-Jackson was quoted in the campaign video saying:

“Everyday, working families get up and choose to provide for their children just as my dad did, just as I did, but everyday choices are becoming more and more difficult. Our elected officials are trying to take away your freedom to choose. They are choosing to take away your right to vote. Just as they are choosing to take away a woman’s right to choose for themselves. They are choosing to defend the broken status quo. I’m here to defend your freedom to choose. We must use it or risk losing it. I’m Elvi Gray-Jackson and I’m running to be your next United States Senator of Alaska.”

 

This race is going to be under the new ranked-choice voting system chosen by Alaskan voters. All candidates running for a specific office run in the primary together, and the top four vote-getters advance to the general election where the voters rank the candidates by their political preference.
