State Soccer: SoHi Girls Defeat Kenai, SoHi Boys Place 2nd Against Juneau

The Kenai Kardinals Girls entered the Division II state soccer tournament undefeated and ended up facing the Stars in the championship game.

 

The Kardinals had already beaten the Stars three times over the season, but the Soldotna Stars defeated the Kardinals 3-2 in double overtime.

 

The Stars picked up their first Division II state soccer title in a shootout.

 

Soldotna scored first by Jazzalynn McDonald. Kenai the scored with a goal by Rylie Sparks.

 

Soldotna then scored courtesy of Bay Bloom, the final goal in regulation came from Kyle Verkuilen.

 

After two overtimes, the match went to a penalty kick shootout, Kenai’s Cali Holmes scored first, then two misses by Sarah Baisden and Kylee Verkuilen.

 

Soldotna Stars Liberty Miller, Caylee Uribe-Koivisto and Bay Bloom all scored their shots and secured the win for Soldotna.

 

The Soldotna Star boys lost to Juneau-Douglas in the Division II title match Saturday.

 

The Kenai Central boys landed the fourth place finish in Division II with a victory over Grace Christian on Saturday.
