State Volleyball Brackets Released: Nikiski & SoHi Draw Thursday Afternoon Openers

The brackets and pairings are set for the 2018 ASAA 3A & 4A Volleyball State Championships with the Nikiski Bulldogs and the Soldotna Stars opening play on Thursday afternoon at the Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of UAA.  Both tournaments are double-elimination format with the championships scheduled for Saturday, November 10th.

 

3A State Volleyball Tournament

The Nikiski Bulldogs, #1 seed from the Southcentral Conference, opens tournament play against the Barrow Whalers, #2 seed from the Western Conference, in the 3A volleyball tournament’s final game of the first round.  Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

A Nikiski victory and the Bulldogs advance to a 7 p.m. Thursday contest against the winner of the Homer/Valdez game.  A first-round loss and Nikiski plays Friday at 11:45 a.m. in the double-back bracket.

 

3A State tournament qualifiers include:

Southcentral conference: Nikiski, Grace, Homer

Western Conference: Nome, Barrow

Aurora Conference: Monroe Catholic, Valdez

Southeast Conference: Mt. Edgecumbe

 

The Valdez Buccaneers are the reigning 3A champions from 2017; Barrow the 2017 runner-up.

4A State Volleyball Tournament

The Soldotna Stars, #3 seed from the Northern Lights Conference, opens play against the Mid-Alaska #1 seed West Valley Wolfpack in the 4A volleyball tournament’s 1:30 p.m. Thursday contest at UAA.

A SoHi victory and the Stars advance to a 7 p.m. Thursday winner’s bracket game against the winner of the West Anchorage/Thunder Mountain contest.  A first-round loss and the Stars play Friday at 11:45 a.m. in the double-back bracket.

 

4A State tournament qualifiers include:

Northern Lights Conference: Colony, Wasilla, SoHi

Cook Inlet Conference: Dimond, South, West

Mid-Alaska Conference: West Valley

Southeast Conference: Thunder Mountain

 

The Dimond Lynx are the reigning 2017 champions.  Dimond has won three-consecutive 4A state championships including 2015, 2016 and 2017.
