A benefit will be held this Friday at the Soldotna VFW for the family of the Sterling man who was fatally shot by an Alaska State Trooper on October 24.

49-year-old John Ployhar was shot once, fatally, after failing to stop his vehicle for an officer, a short chase, and physical altercation with the trooper.

A Sound Off caller identified only as Froggy with the Sterling Brotherhood says the benefit will help with funeral arrangements being set up by the family.

“His brother Kent is one of our wounded warriors, he was over there fighting for us for four years straight and he and his whole company got blown up, and they all survived but they’re wounded. No he’s got to take care of his brother’s funeral and everything. So we’re putting on a benefit, the Sterling Brotherhood is getting together, we’ve got some music, a little food, we’ll have an open mic so people can come and share in this benefit with John Ployhar’s family.”

Froggy said Ployhar was a part of the Sterling Brotherhood and helped the Alaska State Troopers apprehend an alleged thief wanted on multiple warrants in September.

He added that the Brotherhood is hosting the event as a way to pay it forward to Kent and wounded warriors.

The benefit will be from 6-9 pm at the Soldotna VFW post on Friday.
