Absentee voting will begin next Monday for Soldotna’s Special Election and there’s still time to register as an absentee voter.
City Clerk Shellie Saner detailed the question that will be on the ballot, put back before Soldotna residents by a citizens’ initiative.
Saner: “‘Shall a charter commission be elected to prepare a proposed charter?’ A yes vote would form a charter commission and cause the seven charter commission candidates receiving the highest number of votes to be elected. A no vote would result in the charter commission not being formed and no candidates being elected. As well as that question on the ballot, there will be nine candidates to vote on but you can vote for no more than seven of those candidates.”
If the commission is created, the members would then have one year to create a Home Rule Charter for Soldotna that would be put before voters.
Absentee voting for the special election begins on April 25…
Saner: “It is 8 am to 5 pm here at City Hall and that’s in person. If you are going to out of town you can email, call, or fax the application to the city clerk and we will turn around and send you back a ballot. If you want to vote by mail, applications for an absentee ballot need to be received no later than 5 pm on May 3rd. And if you want to vote by electronic transmission, applications need to be received no later than 5 pm on May 9th, 2016.”
The polls for in-person voting on May 10, the Special Election day, will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The same question was put before voters in February 2015 and failed by 63.21 percent.
