Street Inventory and Management Plan Shows Soldotna in Good Shape Overall

Last week a consulting firm presented positive findings of Soldotna’s Street Inventory and Management Plan to the City Council.

Patrick Cotter with PDC. Inc, Engineers reported what they found while the company was evaluating Soldotna’s 30 miles of paved streets and 11 miles of gravel roads to prioritize maintenance.

Cotter: “Most of the streets are actually in pretty good shape, according to our assessment most of them are really just in a state where they need to be maintained, so no major improvements and no reconstruction or capital costs that way. There are some roads that are obviously on the borderline of needing to be reconstructed so we’ve identified those and made recommendations for both the capital projects and just kind of the maintenance, go-with-the-flow sort of things.”

Among the top Capital Improvement Projects the plan listed the rehabilitation of South Kobuk Street slated for 2017 along with paving Lord Baranof Street that year and rehabilitating North Kobuk in 2018.

The agency found that Soldotna’s maintenance department is doing well preserving city streets and “provides a level of service comparable to or slightly better than cities of similar size and geography”.
