Stricter Residency Requirements Adopted for Marijuana Businesses

Marijuana Control Board members has voted to adopt stricter Alaskan residency requirements for future applicants for legal pot retail businesses.

The board met briefly Tuesday morning where members decided to scrap the residency rule adopted in November requiring the same stipulations of Alaska canna-business applicants as Alaska voters.

Instead, board members adopted regulations using the definition of information needed from Alaskans to qualify for the annual Permanent Fund Dividend check, including being a state resident for a full calendar year.

When the previous requirements were adopted for residency, the Marijuana Control Board’s director had questioned the ability of their limited staff to verify applicants weren’t registered to vote elsewhere.

A proposal that would have allowed limited outside investment in Alaska’s licensed pot businesses was determined by the board attorney to be outside of the scope of the meeting.
