According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, A line of strong thunderstorms has developed in the Western Kenai Peninsula and is bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and small hail along the Sterling Highway from Sterling to Soldotna as well as northwest toward the City of Kenai.
These storms are moving westward and should be heaviest through 6 p.m. on Friday, September 6th.
Storms developing east of this line are not expected to be as intense.
Thuderstorm Saftey Tips:
- When thunder roars, go indoors: If you’re outside, move to a sturdy building or car with a roof. If you’re on a boat, return to shore as soon as possible.
- Stay away from water: Avoid running water, plumbing, and bodies of water like lakes and ponds.
- Avoid electrical equipment: Don’t use corded phones, computers, or other electrical devices. Unplug appliances and air conditioners to prevent power surges.
- Stay away from windows and doors: Strong thunderstorms can cause flying debris.
- Stay in a safe location: Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
- Avoid open spaces: Avoid open areas like beaches, pools, and sports fields.
- Avoid objects that conduct electricity: Stay away from barbed wire fences, power lines, and windmills.
- If you’re struck by lightning: Call for help, assess the situation, and respond.
- If you’re caught outside: Keep moving toward a safe shelter
