Studded Tire Deadline Approaching

Despite Alaska’s quirky weather this year, spring means tire changing season.

 

Jill Reese with the Department of Transportation said tire change deadlines for the Kenai Peninsula are close.

 

Reese: “If you are North of Ninilchik, on May 1 and they can’t go back on until September 15. If you are south of Ninilchik then they need to be off by April 15.”

 

Reese added that driving on the dry roads with studs can damage roads and result in a $50 per vehicle fine.

 

Alyeska Tire General Manager Craig Wortham said drivers started changing their tires over earlier than usual this year; typically…

 

Wortham: “The giant push happens April 30 and 31st. Then May 1st is nuts and it’s just nuts for two weeks after that.”
