Studded Tires Now Allowed Across Entire Kenai Peninsula

Winter is approaching, so now is the time to begin the transition to snow tires throughout the entire Kenai Peninsula.

Snow tires were allowed to be utilized starting September 16 in the northern portion of the peninsula, but October 1 was the first day for snow tires for every part of the state south of the 60th north latitude. That includes communities south of Nikiski, such as Kenai, Soldotna, Anchor Point, and Homer.

The transition back to snow tires might be happening, for some, a little quicker than usual. Earlier this year, the deadline to remove studded tires in Alaska was pushed back from its usual early-April date until May 11, to allow financial relief during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Every year, Alaska State Troopers note a spike in motor vehicle accidents as the seasons change and fall leaves give way to early morning frost.

Troopers have made note to remind Alaskans that even with studded tires being legal, drivers must still pay attention and be prepared for the initial layers of ice that will soon develop as temperatures drop. They also remind drivers to begin slowing even more ahead of time when approaching intersections and stop lights, as sliding is always possible.
