A pair of contrasting running/ physical fitness events were contested over the weekend with the Rotary Unity Run and the Alaskaman Extreme Triathlon both held on Saturday.
Rotary Unity Run
The 2017 Rotary Unity Run, competed on a new course with a new race distance for 2017, filled the Tsalteshi Trails on Saturday. The course layout and distances may have been blurred a bit; but runners battled-through the Unity Run event.
The overall winner in the 5-Mile event was Melanie Sexton, recording a time of 50:51; followed by Eric Trevino, 53:01 and Bud Sexton, 53:55.
The top finisher in the 10K event was Bill Wood, completing the course in 40:13; followed by Benjamin McGarry, 40:45 and Sean Goff, 41:18
2017 Alaskaman Extreme Triathlon
The Alaskaman Extreme Triathlon, beginning in Seward and concluding with a couple of trips up and down Mt. Alyeska, included a 2.67 swim leg in Resurrection Bay, a 113.5-mile bike leg along the Seward Highway, and a 27. 5 mile run to the finish at Mt. Alyeska.
Andrew Fast (great name for a runner), from Salt Lake City, posted the fastest overall combined time of 11 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds.
