As of 6:30 pm Sunday, the top five contenders in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race have all left the Shaktoolik checkpoint and are now heading to Koyuk. There are only four checkpoints left before the finish line in Nome.
Dallas Seavey is in the lead, followed by Brent Sass, leaving Aliy Zirkle in third on the trail. Seward’s Mitch Seavey left the Shaktoolik checkpoint in fourth and Wade Marrs rounds out the top five.
All top five Iditarod mushers have taken their mandatory 8 and 24 hour layovers.
Eighty-five mushers began the race one week ago, so far eight have scratched.
