Super Tuesday Prepares to Kick-off in Alaska

Approaching the national event of Super Tuesday, polls show Republican voters are supporting GOP front runner Donald Trump with Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Florida Senator Marco Rubio neck-and-neck in second.

Alaska’s Presidential Preference Poll will be held tomorrow across the state. Randy Daly has been helping organize Kenai Peninsula polling locations…

Daly: “This is where you start choosing delegates that will go to the national convention. So what we will do is if your candidate has the majority of the votes, they will get the majority of the delegates. So you’ll have the vote on the 1st and then you’ll have the district conventions, which for [Districts] 29 and 30 are going to be on the 5th here on the Peninsula, and then you have the state convention and then you have the national convention. So what we’re doing is getting into the process to select the candidates that will go vote for your candidate for President.”

Alaska is considered a “powerhouse” Republican state and sends 28 delegates to the national convention, the same number as Oregon, more than New Hampshire, and just slightly below Iowa. The Alaska GOP explains, “it’s because of the strength of our Republican base here in Alaska,” where there are three GOP representatives in Congress, and Republican majorities in the state House and Senate.

With several candidates out of the Republican race, it’s now down to just five names: Trump, Rubio, Cruz, Ohio Governor John Kasich and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Candidates who receive at least 13 percent of the Super Tuesday vote will be awarded delegates through a “mathematically proportional system.”
