Survivors Identified in Iliamna Plane Crash

The seven survivors of Tuesday mornings’s fatal Iliamna float plane crash have been identified by Alaska State Troopers.

 

The pilot of the de Havilland DHC-3T Turbine Otter which crashed just after takeoff has been identified at 54-year-old John Furnia of New York.

 

The surviving passengers were also out of state residents: 27-year-old Justin Schillaci of Pennsylvania, 23-year-old Robert Westbrook of Oregon, 25-year-old Seth Hofland of Utah, 67-year-old David Wood of Pennsylvania, 62-year-old Robert Dingler of California, and 65-year-old Rodger Glaspey of California.

 

All were transported to Anchorage by the Rescue Coordination Center for treatment of various injuries, some critical.

 

The case has been turned over to the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the crash which killed three other out of state men.

 

Those men were identified yesterday afternoon as 80-year-old Toney Degroot of California; 70-year-old James Fletcher, also from California; and 69-year-old James Specter of Pennsylvania. Next of kin have been notified.

 

Troopers in Dillingham received the report of the crash just before 6:30 am Tuesday, September 15.

 

The plane appeared to have crashed just after takeoff from the Iliamna airport, the scene was north of the airport near Eastwind Lake.
