Tax Scams Leading to Identity Theft

The Better Business Bureau has noticed a trend of identity theft via the IRS scam which has been so prevalent.

Tabler: “Scammers have actually been able to obtain people’s social security numbers and file a tax return in their name and get a refund. So this year the IRS is urging people, even if you aren’t required to file a tax return, to file anyway to make sure that your identity has not been stolen and that nobody has filed for you.”

Michelle Tabler with the BBB said that if your identity has been compromised in that way, the IRS will work with you to correct it and provide an individual personal identification number to file taxes in the future.

She also said the scam where callers claim to be the IRS and demand payment is still prevalent.

Tabler: “So just know the IRS will never contact you by phone.”
