The first-ever running of The Alaska Relay, a 185 mile running relay from Chugiak to Seward, Alaska, featured 16 teams racing from Chugiak’s Mirror Lake to Seward High School.

A team comprised predominately by athletes from Kenai and Soldotna completed the course in third place overall reaching Seward in the mid-afternoon on Saturday, after leaving Mirror Lake at noon on Friday. The Stallions to Chicks team (the name drawn from the Chugiak Mustangs (start line area) and the Seward Seahawks (finish line area) was comprised of 12 team members including:

Rustin Hitchcock and Becca Hitchcock, Lee Frey, Sean Goff, Lauren Bauder, Dallas Baldwin, Johna Beech, Darin Markwardt, Nicole Lee, Colin Atkinson, Kailey Mucha and Bree Mucha.

Each member ran three of the 36 legs for a total of nearly 185 miles.

Teams raced in a relay format with team members running designated legs of the 185-mile course through trails, roads, backwoods and downtown areas, coastal trails and hilltop climbs, and following the general course of the Old Seward and New Seward highways to Seward. All 16, 12-person teams completed the course in the races inaugural season finishing Saturday at Seward High School.

The overall winner was Team “Lactic Alaskan Trip” completing the course in 23 hours, 47 minutes; the only team to complete the event in under 24 hours, averaging just over 8 minute miles for the 185 -mile course.
