Kenai’s Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is celebrating 15 years of exciting students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by having a geocache rally Saturday, September 18.
Geocaching.com is also celebrating its 15th year since launching according to Spring Larrow with the Center, so the rally seemed fitting.
Larrow: “Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunting, basically. You use your GPS unit to put in coordinates and you go out and you look for these caches. Often times they have a little piece of treasure inside of them and you will take a piece and leave a piece. It is really a neat way to explore different trails and to find something and to leave something. You’re using technology, you’re out in the wilderness, so it’s really a neat thing that’s really catching on.”
Larrow said the some of the geocache clues are similar to riddles.
Larrow: “You need to like looking for things. You need to be tenacious and not give up easily because some of these are kind of tricky. They could be hidden in little teeny tiny, they have little caches called micro-caches.”
Teams will compete tomorrow to see who can find the most geocaches.
