Record air cargo volumes continue to come through the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), surpassing previously record-breaking volumes for the first half of this year. At the end of the third quarter, ANC welcomed 917,753 metric tons of air cargo – a 5.62% increase compared to the third quarter of 2020. Cargo increases are expected as the airport has been recognized for being a strategically located international hub where 90% of the industrial world is within a 9.5-hour flight.
The influx of cargo to the world’s 4th busiest air cargo airport brings increased job opportunities and benefits to the economy as ANC announced an air cargo shipping study, done in partnership with the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, was recently completed. They jointly announced a new shipping method to help alleviate current bottlenecks in the supply chain.
It’s called ANC PASS, which works to combine ANC’s air cargo network and the backhaul capacity of ships servicing the Port of Alaska. The ANC PASS study was conducted between 11 points of origin in Asia, four west coast ports, and seven U.S. destinations using a variety of freight classes. It shows that cargo from Asia can be injected into the west coast distribution facilities in as little as 6 to 7 days, with the worst-case scenario being 15-19 days, with the shipping lines servicing the state having their own facilities in Tacoma, WA.
