Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

Families should keep canine safety in mind as they prepare Thanksgiving meals.

Dr. Wendy Gruber with the Kenai Veterinary Clinic said overall she recommends not feeding dogs table scraps but there are some items in particular to avoid completely like turkey skin…

Gruber: “Turkey skin has a lot of fat in it, we know fatty foods can cause the most harm in terms of the vomiting and diarrhea causing things. I have a tendency to say if you are going to feed them something from the table, a very small amount of a lean piece of meat.”

Raw bread dough…

Gruber: “It tastes good so they go ahead and eat it. Their stomach is nice and warm so that dough starts to rise in their stomach and can expand to pretty dangerous degrees and it is something that has to be surgically removed.”

And turkey bones…

Gruber: “They’re just not as tough as say beef or pork bones, all avian bones are fairly brittle so you do want to keep them away from that as well.”
