After finishing two phases of spruce bark beetle mitigation, the City of Kenai is getting ready to release a third project for bid.
At Kenai’s Annual State of the City, Terry Eubank, Kenai City Manager, said the two finished phases focused on the western side of town. “We started on Forest Drive and that drainage that went up through there. We moved east to the second drainage.”
He says the third project will continue moving to the east.
Eubank mentions that the City’s focus is “creating and being able to maintain fire breaks in the event there’s a fire in town,” and they’ve got about 3/4 of $1,000,000 that they’ll have spent by the time they’re done.
“We are very fortunate. Last year the borough came to the city, and they have some funds as well, they focused on some properties, both city property and borough property, and focused around major roads. They wanted to make sure that there was proper egress for people in the event of a fire, and they did some clearing here, too. So you see a lot of mitigation going on, and we’re gonna be continuing that.” Says Eubank.
