Thousands of Alaskans will need to find new insurance providers as two companies prepare to leave the individual health care market.
Aetna and Assurant Health have notified the Division of Insurance they intend to leave, making Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield and Moda Health the remaining insurers.
Division of Insurance Director Lori Wing Heier said fewer than 6,000 policyholders will be affected.
The division is working to contact another company licensed to provide individual policies for Alaskans but that company has not written those kinds of policies in several years according to Wing-Heier.
Aetna said it looked at factors including whether it could provide affordable plans before making its decision. Assurant is looking for a buyer for its health insurance business nationwide.
