In February, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District administration will meet with site councils and anyone interested in the K-12 education to present the $131 million General Fund preliminary budget for the school year beginning in August. The 2022-2023 (FY23) preliminary budget will be reviewed at these community forums. They are open to the public for review and participation as staff, parents, students, and community members will have an opportunity to learn about the budget, provide input, and ask questions, according to KPBSD’s Director of Finance, Liz Hayes.
Pegge Erkeneff, Director of Communications, Community and Government Relations for the KPBSD told KSRM:
“Coming in February here, we will be having the district-wide community budget forums and so there will be three of those. The first one is February 15th in Homer, February 16th is at Kenai Central High School for the Central Peninsula, and that one will also have a Zoom option, and February 24th on Thursday is in Seward. That’s an opportunity where our Director of Finance, Liz Hayes, will talk about our FY23, which is the 2022-2023 school year budget for this school year beginning in August and what we’re looking at with that.”
A joint work session was held earlier this month with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Hayes was joined by several members of the District Administration and the Board of Education. The FY23 budget process began in October by projecting enrollment for the next fiscal year. How many kids the district will have is projected. Once that’s made, the state revenue being provided to the district can be projected with HR working on staffing levels based on enrollment.
The FY23 budget recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education on April 4, 2022, and transmitted to the Borough on April 5, 2022.
