Tire Change Deadline Approaching

Despite Alaska’s quirky weather, spring means tire changing season.

Jill Reese with the Department of Transportation said unless the State Troopers push back the deadlines because of weather, Kenai Peninsula dates are close.

Reese: “If you are North of Ninilchik, on May 1 and they can’t go back on until September 15. If you are south of Ninilchik then they need to be off by April 15.”

Reese added that driving on the dry roads with studs can damage roads and result in a $50 per vehicle fine.

Alyeska Tire General Manager Craig Wortham said this was the first time in 20 years he had anyone change their tires in Feb but still expects the push before the deadline.

Wortham: “The giant push happens April 30 and 31st. Then May 1st is nuts and its just nuts for two weeks after that.”
