Today is the last day to change over tires for people who live or travel regularly south of Ninilchik.
Soldotna Dispatcher Avery Harrison with the Alaska State Troopers outlined where the deadlines apply.
Harrison: “South of Ninilchik the deadline is April 15, which is today, everywhere else on the Peninsula is May 1st.”
Jill Reese with the Department of Transportation explained the difference in regions.
Reese: “It’s just a difference in the weather, south of Ninilchik just gets spring sooner than north so they’ve just set that as the dividing line.”
Reese added that driving on bare roads with studs can damage roads and Troopers may enforce the deadline with $50 per vehicle fines.
