Tonight’s Borough Assembly Meeting Topics

A couple of topics on the Borough Assembly Meeting agenda are the proposed five lane Kenai Spur Expansion and whether or not Borough Employees should be allowed to serve as Elected Officials.

We spoke to Assembly Member Wayne Ogle about a resolution he will present.

Ogle: ” Hal Smalley and I are sponsoring a resolution in support of a five lane highway expansion and we’re hoping our colleagues on the assembly will support that and go forward on it. They only have 20 million dollars in which to do the project which is about only half the money available for it but we hope that there will be some other funding that will be used.”

Ultimately the decision is up to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Ogle said. Some of the reasons he said he is supporting this project is because of projected population growth in coming years, the accident statistics on that portion of road, including moose collisions, and the consistent use of school busses and ambulances there.

Another topic to be introduced is whether or not Borough employees will be allowed to serve as elected officials.  Ogle said this may lead to public hearings later.

Ogle: “I think it’s interesting. It certainly would introduce a political component to Borough Administration. I’m hearing my constituents are not particularly high on the idea. But I haven’t really formulated an opinion yet.”

The meeting will be held at 6pm at the Borough Administration Building.
