The 2014 ASAA State Track and Field Championships featured two days of competition in the 4A (large school) and 1-2-3A (small school) divisions.
The state championships were contested at Dimond High School.
2014 ASAA State Track and Field Championships: Saturday Finals
The Colony girls and the Dimond boys raced to the team titles in the 4A division. The 1-2-3A team titles go to the Grace Christian girls and the Anchorage Christian boys.
State Championships: Saturday Highlights
Kenai’s Allie Ostrander continued her state championship run in Saturday’s finals, winning the 1600M run in a new state record time of 4:49.47. Ostrander also added a state championship run in the 800M run. For the weekend, Ostrander won three championships sweeping the distance events. Kenai’s Abby Beck placed second in the girls discus with a season best 110’11”. Jordan Theisen placed second in the 1600M and Jonah Theisen placed third in the 1600M and fourth in the 800M run. The Kenai boys 4X800M relay team placed third.
SoHi’s girls 4X800M relay defended their 2013 title running away with the state championship in Saturday’s first running event. The Stars team of Oliva Hutchings, Sadie Fox, Dani McCormick and Daisy Nelson narrowly missed a state record by just .6 seconds posting a time of 9:35.87. The SoHi girls also finished second in the 4X400M relay. Oliva Hutchings and Dani McCormick placed second and third in the open 800M run. Makayla Wong placed third in the girls shot put.
Skyview senior Micah Hilbish raced to victory in the 1-2-3A boys 800M run and added a third place in the 400M dash.
The Skyview boys 4X800M relay won the 1-2-3A event in a time of 8:37.06.
Cook Inlet Academy’s Zac Taplin won the boys discus event in the 1-2-3A division with a throw of 131′. Zac also finished second in the boy shot put in the 1-2-3A division.
Kodiak’s Levi Thomet sweep the distance events at the 4A level with victories in the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M. Colony’s Peggy Mathis sweep the girls 4A sprints winning the 100M, 200M, and 400M dash events. ACS’s Tanner Ealum won the 1-2-3A sprints with victories in the 100M, 200M, and 400M.
2014 ASAA State Track and Field Championships: Friday Event Results
Allie Ostrander, KCHS junior, set a new state record in the girls 3200M run on Friday, easily eclipsing one of the state’s longest standing state records. Ostrander raced to a 10:13.87 in the 3200M, nearly lapping the field; en route to, her first state track individual championship. Ostrander bettered the existing 3200M record set Kristi Klinnert set in 1986.
Seth Carstens, Nikiski senior, won the 1-2-3A boys high jump with a jump of 6’3″ and the Skyview boys 4X800M relay raced to a state title in the 1-2-3A division.
