UPDATE: Fatal Traffic Accident On Seward Highway Near Mile 105

12/21 UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Melanie S. Hinkle. Next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.

 

 

9:15 P.M. UPDATE: Both lanes of the Seward Hwy at mile 105 are open.

 

 

4:30 P.M. UPDATE: Further investigation of the collision scene has found that the driver of the Subaru did not attempt to pass another vehicle. The driver of the Toyota had crossed into the northbound lane and struck the Subaru head-on. Officers anticipate the highway being closed for at least 2-3 hours.

 

 

2:30 P.M. UPDATE: This is now a fatal traffic investigation. The preliminary investigation found that a Subaru Outback was headed northbound and a Toyota 4Runner was headed southbound. The adult female driver of the Outback attempted to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with the 4Runner. The adult female has died. An adult male passenger from the Subaru was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured. The Seward Highway will remained closed in both directions for several more hours as the investigation continues. The winter weather is creating dangerous driving conditions in many parts of the Anchorage and surrounding areas. Drivers are urged to use caution, take it slow, turn on your headlines and wear your seat belt.

 

 

ORIGINAL STORY – A traffic accident closed the Seward Highway at Mile 105 near Falls Creek Trail, according to AK 511. Both the north and southbound lanes are closed due to a vehicle collision with injuries.

 

Mile 105 on the Seward Highway also happens to be where construction work is taking place as crews are performing shoulder work from mile 100 – 105.

 

No other details are known at this time.
