Anyone who missed Friday’s Kenai Peninsula Transportation Task Force meeting can still submit a written public comment until 5:00 pm today.

Conner: “I think what we’re looking for is community and agency involvement so that the plan that is written has some motivation to start working on some of the gaps and needs that we have in our community. Right now I think we’re spending a lot of money on transportation on a very small amount of people.”

Meeting attendees echoed job problems created by lack of affordable transportation between Kenai and Soldotna.

Currently Central Area Rural Transit System is the only local group that applies each year to receive federal funding each year.

The group has been investigating public transit around the state and Conner said many places have a variety of services that receive the grant funding.

Conner: “Like in Mat-Su if you look there’s several different agencies that all receive that same funding under a lead agency or a fiscal agent. Here we don’t have that, we just have CARTS that’s providing the services and as the individual that’s getting the funding as well.”

The newly organized Kenai Public Transportation Task Force hopes to investigate the feasibility of a fixed transportation route between Kenai and Soldotna; the drivers would be allowed to deviate up to a three-quarter mile radiusto pick up riders when requested.
