MOOSE PASS – A Juneau man has been arrested following a vehicle fire at a campground near mile 30 of the Seward Highway early Saturday morning.

According to the Alaska State Troopers, the Moose Pass Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around 2:00 a.m. on July 5 to a report of a vehicle on fire at the campground. Later that morning, around 8:00 a.m., the vehicle’s owner contacted Troopers, reporting that the vehicle may have been stolen, which led to an investigation into the incident.

Troopers say the investigation resulted in the arrest of Mark Penamora, 41, of Juneau. He faces charges of first-degree vehicle theft, second-degree theft, third-degree arson, and tampering with physical evidence.

Penamora was taken to Spring Creek Correctional Center, where he is being held without bail pending arraignment.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Alaska State Troopers at (907) 262-4453 or submit tips online at AKtips.
