The Tsalteshi Trails features over 25 kilometers of recreational trails designed and maintained for cross country skiing, biking, running and hiking, based at the main trailhead at Skyview Middle School.
The Tsalteshi Trails December membership meeting was spotlighted by a president’s report presented by board president Mark Beeson.
Beeson included many of the advancements and programs offered.
“We also have seen record numbers of individual trail users, as community members look for a safe way to recreate, exercise, and socialize outdoors. The cancellation of our mainstay summer programs presented some fiscal challenges, but we’ve also had the opportunity to apply for many new grants to help keep the lights on. Bill Holt, our Facilities Maintenance Manager, finished up an RTP grant that expanded our trail lighting to 5.25 miles in total. With the same grant, we’ve begun improving signing throughout the whole trail system, with a specific emphasis on the Slikok trails. In response to heightened trail use, we’ve extended the lighting on the trails until 10 at night. This last winter saw a dramatic improvement in single-track grooming, as Nathan Kincaid invented a grooming drag specifically for our single-track. With the help of the Borough, we’ve expanded the parking area at the Slikok Trailhead. And at the beginning of this month, we extended our lease for another ten years.”
“We’re looking forward to a more predictable 2021, but we’re committed to staying flexible and doing our very best to keep our trails and programs safe and fun to use. Youth Ski is slated to begin soon, with stringent COVID-19 mitigation plans of course. We’re excited for the return of Tsalteshi Sprockets and our summer bike races. We have some exciting trail refinement coming, new signposts, trailhead barriers, and signage to go up in 2021. As well as a new Facilities Maintenance Manager and expanded volunteer opportunities.”
